How to Choose the Right Map Size for Your Wall

One of the most common questions when buying a wooden world map is: what size should I get? Too small and it gets lost on the wall. Too large and it can overwhelm the space. Here's a simple guide to getting it right.

Start with Your Wall Width

The golden rule for wall art sizing: your piece should cover roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the wall width (or the width of the furniture below it). This creates visual balance without the art feeling cramped or floating.

For example:

  • A 2-metre sofa → aim for a map that's 130–150 cm wide
  • A 3-metre feature wall → a map 180–220 cm wide will feel proportional
  • A narrow hallway wall (80–90 cm) → a smaller map of 60–70 cm works well

Consider the Room's Scale

Room size matters as much as wall size. In a large, open-plan living room with high ceilings, a bigger map will feel more at home. In a cosy study or bedroom, a medium-sized map can be just as impactful without dominating the space.

High ceilings: Go larger — the extra vertical space means a bigger piece won't feel overwhelming.
Standard ceilings (2.4–2.7 m): Stick to the two-thirds rule and you'll be fine.

Measure Before You Buy

It sounds obvious, but it's worth saying: measure your wall before ordering. Use painter's tape to mock up the dimensions on the wall and step back to see how it feels. This takes five minutes and saves a lot of second-guessing.

Think About Viewing Distance

A world map has a lot of detail — country borders, ocean textures, continent shapes. If your map will be viewed from across a large room (3+ metres away), a larger size lets you appreciate that detail. If it's in a hallway or smaller room where you'll be closer, a medium size works perfectly.

Don't Be Afraid to Go Bigger

Most people who hesitate between two sizes end up wishing they'd gone larger. A bigger map has more presence, more impact, and fills the wall with confidence. When in doubt, size up.

Quick Size Guide by Room

  • Living room (above sofa): Medium to large — match the sofa width
  • Bedroom (above bed): Medium to large — at least two-thirds the headboard width
  • Home office: Medium — proportional to your desk or feature wall
  • Hallway: Small to medium — depends on wall width
  • Kids' room: Medium — big enough to read, small enough to feel friendly
